JustWatch – Cinema Visibility

A product management take-home challenge focused on helping users discover in-cinema availability for upcoming titles on JustWatch, across TV, web, and mobile. The concept explores the gap between adding films to a Watchlist and actually catching them in theaters before they hit streaming.

This case study was completed as part of a hypothetical product challenge for JustWatch. All analysis, designs, and prototypes are my own and based solely on publicly available information.

Challenge

How might JustWatch better surface theatrical showtimes for upcoming titles, so users don't miss their chance to catch a movie in cinemas?


This case study explores a hypothetical product challenge: defining a potential user problem and business opportunity, designing cross-platform experiences for TV, web, and mobile, and proposing how to integrate showtime data so that "in theatres" availability could become a more visible and engaging part of the JustWatch experience.

Key Work & Outcomes

  • Clarified the core user problem and its impact on trust in the Watchlist feature by mapping user pain points, observed behaviour and frustration.
  • Analysed the current TV, web and mobile experiences, documenting as-is title pages and Watchlists and identifying gaps in cinema visibility.
  • Defined requirements and a data model for ingesting showtime data via MovieGlu, including essential fields, technical constraints and coverage considerations.
  • Designed 'Now in theatres' labelling and end-to-end flows from Watchlist to title pages, including a QR-based handoff from TV to mobile and localised showtime search on web and mobile.
  • Outlined measurement and delivery: success metrics across engagement and ticketing intent, plus a phased rollout and Gantt-style delivery plan.

Learnings

Making cinema availability visible at the right moments not only improves the user experience, it also strengthens JustWatch's value to studios and distributors by capturing richer intent data during the theatrical window. A key takeaway was balancing a clear, habit-forming consumer journey across devices with the needs of B2B partners and the practical constraints of showtime data integration.
